Layover at Half-Ass'd Ranch

Our stay here at Jackie and Donna's place has been the perfect tonic between stages. Walter is putting on weight grazing a large pasture plus daily grain.

Sir Walt arrived in Texas as fit in muscle tone as any professional athlete, but he still needed a few extra pounds. His feet are healing - he has a moderate case of "seedy toe" aka "white line disease," mostly in his front feet. (It's when bacteria enters the white line area between the hoof wall and the sole, causing separation and gaps.) And the presence of the Bryants' herd just over the fence has Walter relaxed and feeling safe.

After over six weeks of travelling through unknown territory, it is balm for the soul to be in the home of someone from my own circle. It's a very relaxed, laid-back home with cheerful humans and happy critters. Just a joy to be here. Jackie and Donna have graciously given me all the time and space I might wish, as well as helping prepare for the next leg in practical ways. My only regret is that I won't get to stay at thier Mule Camp several miles away. It's too far off my route to use as a departure point.

This place is pretty rural, and Donna and I have been doing some short rides on local back roads.

We're gearing up for the next five days. We've mapped out a route that will take us from here to Donna's daughter and son-in-law's place, to daughter's friend's place, to SIL's friend's place, to sale barn, ending at farm of another friend from the mule group. By "us" I mean not only me and Walter, but also Donna, Donna's daughter and SIL, and possibly for the last day, SIL's friend. It's gonna be a trail ride this week! Walter will be carrying at least part of his packs and I'll be camping in the tent; everyone else is coming along in RV's. Which is great for me - good company, safety over a looong bridge, and hot meals! And nice for Sir Walt, as he won't have to carry his full load all the time.
